Tell us a little about yourself.
Uhhh where to start! I’m a bit of an awkward weirdo, but I think that’s one of the things that people like most about me! I married my best friend/business partner, Adam. We love to travel, drink coffee, eat snacks, and snuggle cats!
What is something you are proud of?
In terms of my photography business, I’m really proud at how far I’ve come in the wedding industry! When I started doing this full time in 2013 I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to ‘make it’. It’s a pretty saturated industry here in Halifax and there was/is soooo much amazing work being put out here by some really talented folks! I’m honoured every day that people choose me to be their memory maker and that this is what I’m doing as my career. Something I’m super proud of recently is I won silver place in The Coast’s Halifax Weddings magazine in the wedding photographer category, and have had some features in international blogs, and wedding magazines! It’s really awesome and crazy to think about how far I’ve come in just a few short years. Sorry this was so long, but honestly I’m just so stoked!
Where did you learn photography?
I hate saying this because it really does sound so cliche but I’ve always had a camera in my hand! Growing up, my mom was a bit of a photographer so I learned a little from her, and then went on to graduate from NSCAD University with a major in Photography.
How far in advance should I book your services?
For weddings, it’s a good idea to inquire and book as soon as you get engaged! We usually start to book up about 12-24 months in advance, but there are always a few dates available on short notice, so it’s a good idea to check even if your wedding is like 2 weeks away! For other shoots (families, portraits, engagement shoots) just a week or two in advance works for me!
Describe your photography style.
Hmm I’ve always had a hard time with this... I’ve been told that I have a ‘painterly’ and natural style. I tend to shoot pretty casually (nothing too posed) and really love a mix of candid shots and ‘out of the box’ weird/unique poses.
Do you have an assistant on the wedding day? If so, why?
Actually, for weddings there is always 3 of us capturing your day! I have a co-shooter, Cherakee, who joins us for every wedding, as well as my husband, Adam (our assistant!) I think it’s super important to have more than one angle for every aspect of the day. Adam really helps Cherakee and I out a lot by just carrying our heavy gear, getting us some McDonald’s when we need a snack, and just generally being there to help out on the day. Weddings are busy and long days, so having 3 people is really helpful for not only me, but also beneficial for the bride and groom! Adam has been known to pick up flowers, deliver decor to venues, and he has even driven 1 hour to retrieve a lost phone!
How important is photoshop in your final images?
To be honest, we don’t use photoshop that often! We like to keep our photos pretty true to life, with minimal ‘skin smoothing’. We use Lightroom to put our signature look on our images, and do slight eye brightening/teeth whitening/skin correcting, but the whole ‘plastic skin’ look isn’t really our thing!
Where would be your dream destination to photograph?
100% Iceland! It’s my favourite country to visit (been there a handful of times now and would live there if I could.) I would be sooooo happy to be able to travel there for a wedding! The landscapes are breath-taking, and I just love the moody vibe and surrealness it offers. I would also love to shoot another wedding somewhere in Europe! We were in Paris for a wedding in the Spring and I would loooove to go back!
Do you offer customizable packages?
Sometimes! We do have 2 packages that we offer, but if we really like you and the sound of your wedding and you’re planning your wedding on an off day (weekday) or off season (not the summer or fall) then we can definitely talk about a customized package!
How much should I budget for my photography package?
I suggest that people find a photographer that they really click with, and set aside whatever they’re charging! Photography is really important, and it’s a good idea to not go too cheap.
”Chelle (and Cherakee and Adam) photographed our wedding this past June and if I could give them more than 5 stars, I would. They're exceptionally talented, and somehow manage to make having your photo taken for 12 hours straight feel fun instead of awkward. They're masters at getting a natural laugh and we've had SO. MANY. COMPLIMENTS. on how gorgeous our wedding photos look - including my personal favourite, "I looked through your entire wedding album and didn't get bored." If you're looking for a wedding photographer (or a portrait/headshot photographer - Chelle also did our work photos last month and they turned out AMAZING), you really couldn't possibly do better.”
“I just received my wedding photos from Chelle, and I can easily say that my happiness levels are through the roof. Not only are Chelle and her team amazing to work with, the photos they deliver are incredible. Chelle did both our engagement and wedding photos, and I'm sure she will be capturing many more life events for us in the future!”
