Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Emily Seaboyer. I own and operate Locusart Jewellery from my petite rural studio just outside of Brooklyn/Windsor. I am NSCAD alumni, having graduated with a major in Jewellery Design & Metalsmithing, but also minors in both Art History and Drawing!
I often describe myself as an old soul, and my values are firmly rooted in love, family and Mother Nature.
How do you find inspiration for your pieces?
I passionately believe in true love. The kind of love that is full of joy and tribulation. It is the story-telling that drew me into this art after all. Heirloom marriage rings are meant to be passed on from generation to generation but they rarely travel their journey alone. These rings bear witness to lives, great stories, and are often passed on with passionate tales of happiness and sorrow.
It is important to me that each of my designs functions well for day-to-day since each piece is meant to be well-worn and well loved. That said, I am most inspired by organic lines and textures- I am continuously examining natural elements in close detail. Finding the intersection between the poetry of organic lines/textures and the technical possibilities/limits is always a wonderful exploration. Clean aesthetic and “wear ability” ultimately shape my aesthetic.
How long have you been designing and crafting jewellery?
I have been designing and creating jewellery professionally since 2005. The last 12 years have seen me develop my own sense of style and aesthetic that defines who I am as an artist and person.
How long does a custom piece take to produce?
Because I work almost exclusively on custom variations of my own designs and less so on one-of-a-kind commissions the timeline is favorable. Pieces are almost exclusively created to order and typically take between 4-8 weeks to be produced. Often sooner if the design does not require ordering/setting a gemstone.
I encourage meeting with local clients in person at least once to discuss everything in person. This is a wonderful opportunity to understand each couple’s story, to show them designs in person and discuss technical details such as alloys & proper sizing!
Ideally an initial consultation over coffee would take place 3 – 6 months ahead of the wedding date. Though I’ve been known to work much closer and much farther away from the big day.
Are all your pieces one of a kind designs?
Yes! Every design is crafted 100% by me in my petite studio.
Because most of my designs are created for the casting process, however, I do employ a Canadian company to cast models for me. Each original is designed and hand fabricated, and every mold is produced in my studio. This allows me complete creative control over the design & finish work.
Can I use my own gemstones?
Unfortunately, no. Though this is one of my clients most commonly asked questions. I do not possess a degree in gemology- nor do I have the equipment in my studio for assessing heirloom diamonds and gemstones.
As a result, I have a number of phenomenal Canadian & American trade gemstone suppliers that I use. These are some of the most reputable dealers in the industry and the quality and sources of their gems are outstanding. I do also work with lab-grown gem alternatives for clients who are ecologically-minded and prefer not to have a natural/mined gemstone.
What metals do you work with?
I work with gold in all karats and colours. Most specifically Yellow Gold; Rose Gold; White Gold (un-plated) and Green Gold. 10K; 14K; 18K. And of course, sterling silver.
How does the cost of a custom piece compare to ready made jewellery?
In many cases, the cost is comparable to industry-manufactured pieces. I think this is often surprising for many of my clients! Of course, this depends highly on an individual/couples choice in design. Because independent designer work is not created in mass quantities there is a certain amount of extra expense to be expected for additional shipping/brokerage/labour.
“Emily made my engagement ring and our wedding bands. She is so in tune to making every piece a reflection of nature while achieving the wishes of the customer. She gleans from wishes and ideas and creates original and beautiful heirlooms that will be treasured always. Thank you Emily. You are a true artist and creator. Xoxo”
“I have the pleasure to own a number of Locuasart pieces and each one tells the story of a place in nature and a space in an artist’s expression. By manipulating natural beauty Emily is able to create truly unique and timeless heirloom jewellery. These are investment pieces at affordable prices so layer them together and enjoy them every day because they will stand the test of time, both in design and workmanship. My beautiful wedding ring is a testament to Emily’s commitment to customer satisfaction – I wanted a garnet and my husband wanted a green gem so Emily sourced a perfect natural green Tsavorite garnet to please us both. The design of the band to reflect the sea star is delicate and weighty at the same time, giving this ring the impact to serve as both my engagement and wedding band.”
